FROM THE GOLF COMMITTEE
by Alex Henderson, Chairman |
|
I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce the current Golf Committee and clarify what we do and what we don’t do. Most importantly, we are your voice to the POA Board through the General Manager. This committee was created by the Board and consists of eight voting members, all property owners, and five non-voting members, all Big Canoe senior staff. The General Manager appoints the Chairman who, in turn, selects the other seven voting members with the exception of the presidents of the Big Canoe Men’s Golf Association and the Big Canoe Women’s Golf Association respectively, who are automatically members. Members serve a term of three years. We take the responsibility of being the voice of the golfing community quite seriously, and try to ensure that as many of the various constituencies within that community as possible are represented. The current voting members are myself, Tom Cottrell, Mary Tanner (President, WGA), Cindy Cottrell, Duncan Knapp (President, MGA), Ken Varisco, Dick Wendelburg and Mike Monroe. The non-voting members are Stan Stewart (General Manager), Dave O’Connor (Director of Golf), Bill Womac (Director of Operations), Barbara Menoni (Director of Amenity Activities) and Jason Brownell (Golf Course Superintendent). We are an advisory committee – we provide input to the POA Board through Stan Stewart regarding capital requirements and annual budgets. In that regard, we view one of our most pressing needs to be the rebuilding of the Choctaw greens. These are the original dirt-based greens built 34 years ago and are highly susceptible to changes in temperature and moisture. Many large golf courses in Atlanta completely lost their greens this past summer, and Bill Womac informs us that at one point last summer we were only 15 minutes away from losing several Choctaw greens! Only through constant monitoring by our fine golf maintenance staff were we able to prevent this costly and disruptive occurrence. The POA Board has now authorized us to proceed with a major golf course improvement initiative as part of the recently approved Amenity Package, which will include rebuilding these greens and modifying some Cherokee greens as well as major modifications to some entire holes on these two nines. We are also an action committee – we provide direction and guidance to Dave O’Connor and Jason Brownell regarding matters requiring attention that are within currently approved budgetary constraints such as the refurbishing of the three on-course bathroom facilities a year or so ago, a newly revised medical flag policy (thanks to Jerry Berthold), selection of golf carts, etc. Finally, we are fully aware of the challenges the entire golfing community will face over the next two years or so as the demolition and reconstruction of the Sconti complex and the rebuilding of Choctaw and Cherokee progress. As your committee, we are committed to do everything in our power to minimize the disruption this will cause, to maintain the standards of excellence that the course has achieved over the last several years, and to ensure that golf at Big Canoe continues to be the richly rewarding experience we all enjoy and have come to expect. to contact me or any member of the Golf Committee. Your input is important to us! | |
