What's the Site Really About?
Our Goal is to give our members a place to get up-to-date information on what's going on in the Big Canoe golf world. We will have surveys (as you see on the right side of this page) tournament schedules, tournament results, reports from the Golf Committee, Pro Shop, handicap information, and the list will keep growing. Basically, this is your Big Canoe golf source.
A look at WHAT'S HAPPENING IN 2008
We have developed a new and exciting MGA Season. In developing this program we used the comments/recommendations many members expressed. In addition, a new tournament committee will be meeting in January to review tournament formats with the objective of enhancing the challenge and enjoyment of all of our tournaments. Let me outline what is going on in 2008:

Ryder Cup:   The Ryder Cup, a tremendous success in 2007, will return in 2008 with enhancements and revisions to the qualifying points system. Click on the "RYDER CUP INFO" Link at the top to see what the format was for 2006. Also while there, you can see the Ryder Cup points broken down for each 2008 MGA tournament. A brief Ryder Cup history is provide below for those who are new to this tournament:

What is the MGA Ryder Cup Tournament all about?

Three years ago a "Ryder Cup" competition was introduced by your MGA to be part of its' annual tournament program. Tournaments were divided into "Major" + Regular" categories and participants earned "Ryder Cup" points for each tournament they played. Extra points were earned for being a winner in each tournament. What stared as a fun concept to encourage participation in MGA tournaments has developed into a year end event that individuals strive to qualify for during the season.

The tournament is copied after the PGA Ryder Cup. All MGA players are divided into two groups by age which are referred to as "Juniors" + "Seniors". The younger half of our members make up the juniors team and the older half makes up the more mature seniors team. Fourteen players from each age group qualify based on points earned during the year to be on the respective teams. Dave O'Connor captains the Seniors and Linda Hunt captains the juniors.

Players are chosen by the team captains to compete against each other in three separate matches to be played over two days. Each match is worth one point. The first day two man teams compete on the first nine holes in an alternate shot competition and on the second nine holes in a best ball competition. The second day players are picked again by the captains to compete one on one in an 18 hole best ball match. All matches are played using individual players full handicap.

The lead in to this tournament is the start of the fun. Wednesday night a get together is held at one of the players homes. Everyone brings food and has the opportunity to meet with their team members and the opposing team members. Team uniforms consisting of a hat, shirt + jacket are given out.

Thursday night a dinner is held for more spirit building and team matches are made for Fridays two nine hole matches. At the end of Fridays matches individual player matches are assigned by the captains for Saturdays matches. After the Saturdays matches the winning team is decided and all participants have lunch together to discuss their matches. The winners celebrate and the losers say wait until next year. Over the past three years the juniors have won twice and the seniors once. In the last two years the winners were not decided until the last twosomes finished and last year the last putt determined the winner. The matches have proven to be very competitive.

It is a fun event and all MGA members are eligible to qualify. This year as each tournament is announced you will be told what the Ryder Points are that will be awarded to all participants and to the winners. During the year the Ryder Cup point standings will be updated after every tournament and posted on this BCMGA web site.

SPECIAL NOTICE: You must participate in a total of 2 tournaments since July 2007 and prior to June 1, 2008 qualify for the 2008 Member/Guest Tournament! (Limited to first 60 members)
